deep down reminds us of the stars. Glint is a junk drawer that contains both treasures, refuse and notably, the stuff that is most essential for living. It’s also where you might repurpose a broken broken broken pin that reflects a ray of poems in the shape of domestic objects overlaid on top of film stills, unseasonal trend cycles, contaminated taste buds, dissolving bouillon cubes blurring the distinctions between the rural, the urban and agrarian cycles that irrigate thinking between fantasy, food and fashion. In Glint, every effort to contain elliptical ideas glitters into more facets of sparkle matter, joy and abandon. The darkroom is “cheaper than therapy.” Just kidding! The darkroom is just a stuffy, dusty, windowless room. Some imbue it with a form of liquid intelligence, but at times, the whole endeavor just feels clumsy if not slightly dumb and anachronistic. In any case, when in a quest for Essential Pleasures and New Happiness, it’s easier to persevere when you’re not alone in the dark.Over the last few months, the eleven artists involved in the making of this communal photomural developed their own approaches to making images with light, sensitized materials and chemistry. Some built makeshift rigs for shooting lasers through negatives or developed ways to make contact prints from laptop screens. Others enlarged and collaged from negatives found in abandoned satellite fields or taken to fulfill highschool projects. Felix Rapp gently guided and hosted this happy mess in the cramped photo lab that came into existence through his residency at Malaspina Printmakers. For many, the printmaking part of photography is perhaps the least democratic/the most obscure part of the ‘medium.’ Crowded like moths to a flame under the dim light of the enlarger, we looked for ways to establish contact between objects and surfaces, and between our different practices. We didn’t want to be precious but still had to be organized. Some found new things for themselves along the way while others were just happy to momentarily forget themselves in the process. From the heat of summer and into the fall, we came in and out of the darkroom, always happy and exhausted when pushing the glass doors that give onto Howe Street. Often, we were surprised to find that it was already night and that the rain was still falling on the fountains of downtown Vancouver. Presented as part of The Lind Prize Exhibition at The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver BC Natasha Katedralis’s new work explores the material parameters of images by playing with properties such as resolution, dimensionality, flatness, visual tropes, and illusory effect. Over-ripened grapes displaying dramatic proliferations of mould are made weirder by their photographic presentation: pictured on metallic paper, the image experiments with both abstract strangeness and exaggerated hyperreality. Paired with the grapes are black-and-white images, in which visual clues allow the viewer to piece together a picture, possibly of an ornamentally decaled car with a shattered rear window. The work draws from the artist’s interest in the contrary ways in which photography emphasises, dramatises, magnifies and also flattens reality through its modes of representation. 2022 Prop painting. Wether on screen or on stage, the believability of theatre, film and television relies on our static perspective of the events. Side-step, climb-up or move too close and the illusion splinters into irreparable fragments — “I can’t unsee it now!” Taking its cues from theatre, the staging of homes for sale employs a similarly two-dimensional illusion. Stagers scrub the essential quirks that make home feel like home and replace them with replica sofas and freshly patinaed end tables. The overstuffed pillows and turned-around family photos imply that this sofa is not intended for sitting, these images not for our eyes. An agent ushers us over and we’re kindly asked to keep to the front of house.The word prop is an abbreviation of property. Like the decorative objects introduced in the staging of property for sale, props are used to create realistic scenes and scenarios in which actors perform. A real knife, for example, is distinct from a prop knife because it is incapable of wounding. For performers and audiences alike it’s often difficult to tell what’s real and what’s fake. Objects found or purchased blend into fabrications. In one corner, an abandoned handbag slouches on a parquet platform. Across a delicately distorted arrangement of ephemera is spun in polyethylene as-if immobilized for the camera. Just as these objects have come to take the place of wood veneer double beds and TV stands, tenants have also moved in place of guests. &nbsp;In the parking lot, a dumpster holds the broken artefacts of seventy years of hospitality. Every inkling of ornament has been stripped from these rooms in favour of cold ubiquity. Only its exterior gives clues to its past where between guests, film crews dress sets and rig lights for productions about zombies and superheroes. Now for sixty million all of it is slated for demolition. A presentation centre nearby introduces prospectors to monstrous modulations on steel and glass. Adjacent to keywords on lifestyle, free catalogues reveal the panoramic views of the upper stories.
